a hot cereal mix containing cracked wheat, cracked rye and flax seeds.

Type: 1. Origin Red River Cereal is named for the Red River which runs through the city of Winnipeg. The cereal is now produced by Smuckers, an American company, but still marketed as a Canadian product. It was first created in Manitoba in 1924 (see the Smuckers website). As Chart 1 shows, the term is most frequent in Canada.

From the beginning, the McIntoshes used no preservatives but took the attitude that natural foods could taste good. During the early days they experimented with recipes, and that was how Red River bread was born. McIntosh says he was trying something that called for cracked wheat, but the only thing at hand was Red River cereal. With an extremely limited budget, the McIntoshes decided that the best way to get their products -- and their name -- known was to operate a stand in the Market Square. This is their third summer there.

But other than in a few hot breakfast cereals, such as Red River Cereal, and on the shelves of health food stores, flax hasn't been much of an item in the Canadian diet.

[Dale Anderson], who loves to entertain friends and family, says she developed her Canadiana bread recipe after getting a Red River Cereal sample in the mail. She used a basic brown bread recipe from the recipe book that came with her machine and substituted the cereal for the whole grains.

English varies by country, of course - the vocabulary as well as the accent of a New Yorker would sound peculiar in New Brunswick, New South Wales or New Delhi. When I travel abroad, I know there's no point asking for lobster rolls, butter tarts, Beaver Tails or Red River cereal; those foodstuffs and those phrases are unique to Canada.

Potted meats aside, consumers seem to have been on a health kick in the '20s. Oval-tine was touted the Guardian of Family Health, while Red River Cereal promoted itself as The Package of Health.
